Three Important Factors

Before submitting a work order, please review the following information:

  1. Are you plugged in?
  2. Is there internet activity?
  3. Is there an IP Address?
  • Being able to determine the following will greatly quicken the completion of your work order. Please go through this section if you're having difficulty with your connection.

Workstation Internet

Below are a few tips to resolving internet issues with your workstation's wired connection. If you have any questions or the connection still doesn't work, please open an Internet Work Order.

  • Confirm that your computer is plugged into a data port, as every workstation at Sunshine has both a data port for internet service and a voice port for Capanis VoIP phone service.
  • Wired and wireless routers are strictly prohibited on the Sunshine network.
    • Using one will issue you an invalid IP address and disrupt your connection.
    • If you're currently using one, please disconnect it and renew your IP address.
    • If you require more ethernet ports, please purchase an unmanaged ethernet switch or hub. They're available at any office supply or electronics store for $20-30.

Check for DHCP

In order for your computer to use Sunshine's internet connection (along with most others), it must be configured to use DHCP and must be receiving a valid IP address.

Mac

  • Go to System Preferences, select Network, and then select Ethernet.
    • The option Configure must be set to Using DHCP.

Windows XP

  • Go to Control Panel, select Network Connections, then select Local Area Connection. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
    • "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" must be selected to connect to Sunshine's network (along with most other internet connections.)

Windows Vista

  • Go to Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center, then Manage Network Connections. Select Local Area Connection then double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
    • "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" must be selected to connect to Sunshine's network (along with most other internet connections.)

To Renew IP

Mac

  • Go to System Preferences, select Network, and select Ethernet. Click the Advanced button, then click the Renew DHCP lease button.

Windows XP

  • Go to the Control Panel and select Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Repair.

Windows Vista

  • Go to the Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center, then select Manage Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Diagnose.
  • NOTE: If your computer indicates that the ethernet cable is not attached, the cable might be broken.
    • New ethernet cables are available at reception.
    • Please open an Internet Work Order if you're still experiencing problems.

Email

When using a software email client such as Outlook or Entourage, email accounts must be configured to not use port 25; it is blocked for security reasons. If your email server settings use port 25:

  • Check with your email provider for the other email ports they support and adjust your settings accordingly.
  • If you are unable to find your email provider's alternate ports, you can use or setup a free email account (such as Gmail or Hotmail) to send email from your business email address, and use their outgoing mail server settings in your email software. Google has instructions on sending your business email from Gmail and configuring email software with their settings.
  • Another option is to use your email provider's webmail, or configure a free webmail account (such as Gmail or Hotmail) to also handle your work email.
  • Though Sunshine has an outbound email server (mail.capanis.com), it is intended as a last resort in the case your email provider's server goes down. We highly discourage using it as your main outgoing server. Any computer on the network can send email through it, so it is impossible to completely prevent it from getting flooded or otherwise disrupted. As it is intended as a last resort, we do not provide support for problems stemming from it's use, though we're happy to help you setup your email account with one of the options above.
  • If you need assistance or experience problems sending/receiving, please open an Email Work Order.

WiFi

Wireless internet is provided for use in Sunshine's common areas, such as the conference rooms and lobbies.

  • When sitting in your workstation, please use the wired connection.
  • Wireless connectivity in workstations is not supported.

Wireless Information

  • Sunshine's WiFi network is named "sunshine" and the password is "sunshinesuite" (please note that it does not end with "s" like "Sunshine Suites.")
  • Please submit a Work Order if you're unable to connect to Sunshine WiFi in one of the common areas.

Personal Network Printers

Though Sunshine provides commercial-grade printers and copiers, some companies prefer to use their own printer as well.

  • In order to use a personal network printer, it must be configured with a static IP provided by Sunshine.
  • If you don't have an extra data ethernet port to connect your printer, please purchase an unmanaged ethernet switch or hub. They're available at any office supply or electronics store for $20-30.
    • Open an Internet Work Order with the subject "Static IP for personal printer."
      • We'll update the work order with a static IP, which you then configure printer to use.
      • After the printer is setup with the static IP, add the printer on your computer with the printer's new IP address.
      • If you experience problems afterward, please re-open/update your printer work order.

File Sharing

Every company at Sunshine is assigned to their own VLAN.
* This enables companies to share folders and files internally if their computers are configured to do so.
* Shared items are only available to desks rented by your company, not the entire Sunshine community.

  • If you're experiencing problems viewing shared items, please check if your computers are on the same VLAN and submit an internet work order if they are not.
    • Guides to configuring computers for file-sharing are provided below for your convenience:

Checking your computer's VLAN

Mac

  • Go to System Preferences, select Network, and select Ethernet. Click the Advanced button, and note the Router address.
  • The router address will match the Router (Mac) or Default Gateway (Windows) address of your other computers if on the same VLAN.
  • Please submit a Work Order if the addresses aren't the same.

Windows XP

  • Go to the Control Panel and select Network Connections. Double-click Local Area Connection and select the Support tab.
  • The Default Gateway address will match the Router (Mac) or Default Gateway (Windows) address of your other computers if on the same VLAN.
  • Please submit a Work Order if the addresses aren't the same.

Windows Vista

  • Go to the Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center, then select Manage Network Connections. Double-click Local Area Connection and select the Support tab.
  • The Default Gateway address will match the Router (Mac) or Default Gateway (Windows) address of your other computers if on the same VLAN.
  • Please submit a Work Order if the addresses aren't the same.
